Taking the Story — a collaborative storytelling game
In Taking the Story, any number of players create a story together, each writing part of it and then editing each other's parts to bring it into a single, cohesive whole.
In the first round, each player is assigned a part and given a limited amount of time to draft it, guided only by the title and description provided by the host and their assigned position in the story — so the player assigned part one should write an introduction. Players should not discuss the story while writing; they each use their own imagination.
In each subsequent round, players move to the next part of the story and take on the role of a patient editor for a writer with great ideas but a poor grasp of continuity (understandable, since the other player had no idea what they wrote). Expand it, clean it up, and help it fit with what comes before and after. "I like where you're taking the story, but…"
Players rotate through all the parts, eventually returning to where they started. After a set number of rounds, the finished story is revealed to everyone.
